Rekeying changes the inner workings of a compatible lock so the old key no longer operates it and a new key does — all without replacing the visible hardware. It's one of the most cost-effective ways to take control of who can open your doors, and it's a service we perform constantly for movers, landlords and businesses across St. Augustine and Northeast Florida.
Inside most locks is a set of small spring-loaded pins that must line up correctly for a key to turn. Rekeying replaces those pins so they match a new key instead of the old one. The exterior of the lock looks and works exactly as before — only the key that operates it changes. Because you keep your existing hardware, rekeying is usually cheaper than buying and installing new locks.
The most common reason is moving into a new home or rental — you can't know how many copies of the old keys exist, so rekeying resets control to you. It's also ideal after losing a key, when a former tenant, roommate, employee or contractor had access, or when you simply want peace of mind. Landlords rekey between tenants; businesses rekey when staff change.
Another popular reason is convenience: if you have several doors with compatible locks, we can often rekey them so a single key opens all of them.
Rekeying keeps your current hardware and changes the key. Replacement swaps the hardware entirely. Rekey when the locks are in good working condition and you mainly want to control the keys. Replace when locks are damaged, worn, corroded from coastal air, outdated, or when you want an upgrade like a keypad or smart lock. If some doors are fine and others aren't, we can rekey some and replace others in the same visit.
Juggling a keychain full of nearly identical keys is a hassle. When your locks are compatible, we can key them alike so one key handles the front door, back door, garage entry and more. For larger properties or businesses, a master-key arrangement can give different people different levels of access — ask us about master key systems.
Rekeying between tenants is faster and cheaper than replacing locks every turnover, and it keeps your hardware consistent across a property. St. Augustine's large rental and vacation-property market makes this one of our most-requested services for owners and managers.
