Whether you've lost every key to your vehicle or simply want a spare before you're stuck without one, Ancient City Locksmith makes replacement car keys for many vehicles across St. Augustine and Northeast Florida. As a mobile automotive locksmith, we come to your vehicle and, for supported models, cut and program the key on-site.
Vehicles use very different keys depending on age and manufacturer. Traditional mechanical keys simply turn the lock and ignition. Transponder keys add a chip the car must recognize before it starts. Remote-head keys combine the cut blade with lock/unlock buttons. Flip keys fold the blade into the fob. Proximity and push-to-start smart keys let you unlock and start without inserting a key at all.
Which type your vehicle uses determines what's involved in making a replacement — and whether it needs programming.
There's a big practical difference between the two. If you still have a working key, making a spare is usually simpler and less expensive. If you've lost every key, an 'all-keys-lost' replacement is more involved — it may require vehicle-specific tools, key-cutting information and electronic programming, and it takes longer. The lesson most people learn the hard way: make a spare while you still have a working key.
Making a modern car key often has two parts. First the physical blade is cut to match your vehicle's locks. Then, for chipped and smart keys, the key is electronically programmed so the car recognizes it. Some vehicles allow this to be done by a properly equipped mobile locksmith; others have security procedures that require dealer equipment. We confirm which applies to your year, make and model before we start.
Dealerships can make keys for their brand, but it often means towing the vehicle in and waiting. A mobile locksmith can handle many vehicles on-site, frequently faster and at a competitive price. For certain newer or specialized vehicles, the dealer may be the right or only option — and we'll tell you honestly when that's the case rather than have you waste a trip.
Because a car key gives access to a vehicle, expect to show that you're authorized to have one made — typically proof of ownership and identification. This protects you as the owner. Having your documentation ready helps the visit go smoothly.
Have your vehicle's year, make and model ready, whether you have any working key, the key or fob type if you know it, and the vehicle's location. A photo of your existing key or fob can help us bring the right blank and equipment.
