Key Fob Programming in St. Augustine, FL

A key fob that won't lock, unlock or start your vehicle can bring your day to a halt. Ancient City Locksmith programs, adds and replaces compatible key fobs and remotes for many vehicles across St. Augustine and Northeast Florida — on-site, for supported makes and models.

What Key Fob Programming Involves

Programming links a fob to your specific vehicle so the car recognizes and responds to it. Depending on the vehicle, we can add a new fob alongside your existing ones, replace a lost fob, or — on some vehicles — clear old fobs from the car's memory so a lost one can no longer be used. The exact procedure varies widely by manufacturer and model year.

Why a Fob Might Stop Working

Not every fob problem needs programming. Sometimes it's simply a dead battery — an easy fix. Other times the fob itself has failed, been damaged or gotten wet, or the vehicle has an electronic issue. Part of what we do is help figure out which it is, so you're not paying to program a fob when a battery would have solved it.

Before You Buy a Fob Online

It's tempting to buy a cheap fob online, but compatibility is everything. Two fobs can look identical yet use different electronics, frequencies, chips or part numbers, and an incompatible fob simply can't be programmed to your car. If you'd like to supply your own fob, check with us first about what your vehicle actually needs — it can save you from buying the wrong part twice.

What Affects Whether We Can Program It

Programming capability depends on the vehicle's year, make and model, the type of key or fob, the security system, whether all keys are lost, and whether the replacement fob is genuinely compatible. Some vehicles can be handled by a properly equipped mobile locksmith; others have security procedures that require dealer equipment. We confirm this for your vehicle before dispatching.

Fobs, Smart Keys and Push-to-Start

Modern proximity and push-to-start systems use smart keys rather than traditional fobs, and they can be more involved to program. For supported vehicles we handle these too. If you're not sure what type your vehicle uses, tell us the year, make and model and we'll sort it out. See our car key replacement and transponder keys pages for related services.
